South Side Projections Goes Old School at Bowen High School

South Side Projections, a new nonprofit screening series that presents films on Chicago’s south side, will be presenting a free program of 16mm film to students enrolled in CTVN’s After School Matters program at Bowen High School. Michael W. Phillips Jr., director of SSP, will bring an actual 16mm projector and show classic jazz films and cartoons.
The free screening will take place Wednesday, October 19 at Bowen High School from 3:30 to 4:30 pm with a brief discussion to follow.

The jazz films consists of two performances by Fats Waller, a short film featuring Lena Horne, a clueless newsreel from 1937, and the finale of the 1943 film “Stormy Weather,” which includes the greatest dance number ever caught on film. The cartoon program includes Bugs Bunny, Felix the Cat, and the “Sorcerer’s Apprentice” scene from Fantasia.

SSP is pleased to show today’s high school kids how their parents and grandparents used to watch movies in class–on a clattering tabletop projector.
